The Best Homemade Brownies

Homemade brownies have a way of bringing comfort and togetherness. Just as Mary welcomed others with quiet love, these simple treats are meant to be shared with warmth, kindness, and a heart open to blessing. May every batch you bake carry a touch of her sweetness into your home and to everyone you serve.

There is something tender and quiet about baking homemade brownies—mixing simple ingredients, waiting patiently as they rise, and sharing them warm with the people we love. In this small rhythm of giving, we can glimpse the gentleness of Mary, who offered her life in humble service and carried grace into ordinary moments. When we bake with a peaceful heart, we imitate her way of loving: steady, generous, and full of quiet joy. May each batch you make become a small reminder that sweetness shared freely can reflect the kindness of Our Blessed Mother.

These homemade brownies are NOTHING compared to the box-mix versions! These are fudgy, thick, and have a nice crackly top! I think you're going to LOVE these!

Why you'll love this recipe:

-Big chocolate flavor thanks to blooming our cocoa powder! When adding cocoa powder to a hot liquid (take for instance, melted butter & chocolate), it blooms our cocoa and gives us a stronger chocolate flavor! (Not to mention extra chocolate chips!)

-Shiney crackly tops...who would want to miss that? 😊

-Simple and quick! Who has all day to make something delicious? (Maybe cinnamon rolls... 😉)

What you're going to need:

Sugar- A blend of granulated and light brown sugar for this recipe. Brown sugar adds a chewiness in every bite!

Eggs & an extra egg yolk- Egg whites are especially important for those crackly shiny tops, but this extra egg yolk makes the brownies extra fudgy and more tender.

Chocolate- Critical ingredient! We'll be using melted chocolate and butter, and then toss some cocoa powder when warm, just to bloom the cocoa powder! And at the end, we'll be adding some chocolate chips for extra fudginess!

These fudgy brownies are designed to be dense and fudgy. But if you like a lighter brownie you can add a pinch or a 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder with the flour.

  1. Melt butter and chocolate in microwave or on a double boiler.
  2. Immediately add cocoa powder and stir well.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk sugars and eggs vigorously.
  4. Stir in vanilla extract and salt.
  5. Drizzle melted mixture and whisk until combined.

6. Add flour and stir well.

7. Stir in chocolate chips.

8. Bake and enjoy!

I recommend baking your brownies on a metal pan, while glass pans can take longer to bake.

Frequently asked questions:

What makes brownies fudgy vs cakey?

An extra egg yolk, a bit of brown sugar, real melted chocolate, a bit less flour than you might expect, and no baking powder or baking soda all contribute to the rich fudginess of these brownies. If your brownies turn out cakey after following my recipe, it may be that your flour was accidentally over-measured.

Can I use white chocolate instead?

Unfortunately, white chocolate will make these brownies too sweet and oily. If you want to make white chocolate brownies, please tell me, or even blondies would be delicious!

Can I use an 8x8 inch pan?

You could, the brownies would just be a bit thicker and the baking time would vary.

While I write this, I am not kidding...these are the BEST homemade brownies! With a nice chocolate flavor, not too thick, super fudgy...really, if you don't like brownies, you just haven't tried the right one!

As you share these homemade brownies, may each bite carry a little of Mary’s quiet tenderness—the kind of love that comforts, welcomes, and brings people together. In the simple joy of baking and offering something sweet, we echo her gentle way of caring for others. May your kitchen be a place where small acts of love rise like prayers, and where every treat becomes a reminder of the grace that grows in everyday moments.
