The Best Homemade Cinnamon Rolls

There’s something peaceful about making cinnamon rolls — the kneading, the rising, the gentle swirl of cinnamon. It’s a slow process, but a meaningful one. These rolls remind me that patience can be sweet, and that taking time to create something with love is never wasted. Baking can be a quiet prayer, a small offering of warmth to the people around us.

Cinnamon rolls are one of those bakes that make a home feel instantly warm and welcoming. Soft dough, a sweet cinnamon swirl, and a creamy glaze come together to create a treat that feels like a hug. These rolls are perfect for slow mornings, feast days, or sharing with someone who needs a little comfort. They take time, but the process is gentle and rewarding — a beautiful reminder that good things often rise slowly

These homemade cinnamon rolls are soft, tender, and delicious to make! Beginner friendly, bakery result! (You are not going to want to go back to a bakery cinnamon roll! Homemade is always better! 😉)

What you're going to love about this recipe:

-Make them overnight! That way you have fresh, warm, from the oven, cinnamon rolls for breakfast!

-Twelve cinnamon rolls, enough for everyone in the family!

-No hard work, just simple, patience, and love!

What you're going to need for this recipe:

-Yeast. You'll need active dry yeast for this recipe, for instant yeast, you'll need to do other steps.

-Brown sugar, for the filling. It gives us a nice rich and sweet filling.

-Egg & egg yolk. 1 large egg and 1 large egg yolk for more tender results! Remember, room temperature eggs. 😉

-Whole milk. I use and prefer whole milk for this recipe, but you could substitute another milk, just keep on mind it won't be as tender and won't give best results.

-Flour, I use all-purpose flour for this recipe, but bread flour could be substituted (it will give you chewier results).

Cinnamon is a must in cinnamon rolls, but for extra flavor I like to add a pinch of allspice, and it really changes everything around! But if you don't want to or don't have it that's perfectly fine!

  1. Activate the yeastHeat the milk and water to 105-115F, then add the yeast and sugar and let this sit for 5-10 minutes until it is foamy.
  2. Start with the dough Stir in the melted butter, eggs, sugar, salt, and 2 cups of flour.
  3. Add the flour Add more flour until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the bowl, then stop.
  4. Knead the dough Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until it is smooth and elastic, then transfer to a lightly oiled bowl and let rise until doubled in size.

Be careful when adding too much flour. You'll know once it's ready, when it starts to cling to itself and form a ball. If it's still sticky keep on adding more flour.

  1. Prepare the fillingMake the filling while the dough rises and grease your pan with butter.
  2. Deflate the doughGently deflate the dough and roll it into a 20 x 8-inch rectangle.
  3. Add the filling Spread softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle and press your prepared filling evenly over the butter.
  4. Roll it up Roll the dough into a log, starting with a long end. Slice the log into 12 even pieces.

Make sure to let them rise enough time (until doubled in size).

  1. Cover and chill Place the rolls in your prepared baking dish and cover with plastic before placing in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
  2. Second rise  Preheat your oven and let the rolls rise (covered) for about 1 hour or until puffed.
  3. Bake until golden Bake the rolls for 30 minutes or until they are a light golden brown.
  4. Frost and enjoy! Let the rolls cool for 15 minutes before topping with frosting.
